The 5 most common stone-damage mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Most stone damage is preventable. Here are the five mistakes we see again and again across Melbourne homes, and the simple fixes.

1. Bleach and vinegar on stone

Both are acidic to alkaline stone and chemically burn marble, limestone, and travertine. Etching looks like dull patches that don't shine the way the rest of the stone does. Use pH-neutral cleaners only. Even "stone-safe" supermarket products often aren't.

2. No sealer (or a failed sealer)

Unsealed stone is a sponge. Wine, oil, coffee, citrus all soak in within seconds. The fix is simple: a quality penetrating sealer applied properly. The seal should bead water for 3+ years.

3. Lemon juice on benchtops

Marble in particular etches instantly from lemon, vinegar, tomato, and wine. Even a sealer won't stop this. Sealers protect against staining, not etching. Use a chopping board for acidic foods, always.

4. Heavy furniture without protection

Dragging chairs, sofas, or appliances scratches polished stone permanently. Felt pads under everything heavy. Always lift, never drag.

5. Outdoor stone without UV-stable sealer

Cheap sealers fail in 6–12 months under Melbourne sun. The result is patchy fading, water absorption, and algae growth. Always specify UV-stable penetrating sealer for outdoor work.

If your stone has any of the above damage, it's almost always restorable. We diamond-grind out etching, lift stains with poultices, and re-seal so it doesn't happen again.
