The short answer

What to know before you seal granite.

Granite is the one stone where the honest answer is often that you do not need us. It is dense, and a lot of granite absorbs so little that sealing it achieves almost nothing. Some granite does need it, particularly lighter and coarser slabs around a cooktop. There is a two-minute test that tells you which one you have got.

What goes wrong

Oil marks around the cooktop, on some slabs only.

Because granite is not acid-sensitive, wine and lemon do not hurt it, which is why granite benchtops survive kitchens that would ruin marble. What does mark it is oil, and only on the more absorbent slabs. Cooking oil around a cooktop wicks into the crystal structure and leaves a darker patch that does not wipe off. Dense dark granites often never show it. Lighter, coarser ones can mark quickly.

The process

How we handle granite.

  1. 1

    Do the water test

A small amount of water left on the surface for a few minutes. If it darkens, the stone is absorbing and sealing is worth it. If it beads and sits, it is dense and you probably do not need us.

  2. 2

    Draw out existing oil

Old oil marks come out with a poultice rather than cleaning. It is slow, and we will tell you upfront how confident we are before you commit to it.

  3. 3

    Seal only what benefits

Where the test says the stone is absorbing, an impregnating sealer chosen for oil resistance goes in. Where it does not, we will say so.

  4. 4

    Restore the finish if needed

Granite that has been scratched or dulled by harsh cleaners can be re-honed and re-polished mechanically. That is a different job from sealing and priced separately.

Questions

Granite: what people ask.

How do I know if my granite needs sealing?

Put a small puddle of water on it somewhere out of the way and leave it a few minutes. If the stone darkens under the water it is absorbing, and sealing will help. If the water just sits there and wipes away with no mark, your granite is dense enough that sealing adds very little. You can run that test yourself any time.

Will lemon or wine damage my granite benchtop?

No. Granite is not calcium carbonate, so acid does not etch it the way it etches marble and travertine. That is the main reason granite is the safer choice for a working kitchen. Oil is the thing to watch, not acid.

Can you get an oil mark out of granite?

Usually, with a poultice that slowly draws the oil back out. Fresh marks come out more reliably than old ones. Send a photo and we will give you an honest read before you spend anything.

What cleaner should I use on granite?

A neutral pH stone cleaner. Granite tolerates far more than marble does, but repeated use of harsh or abrasive supermarket cleaners will still dull a polished finish over time.

Do you do granite paving as well as benchtops?

Yes. Granite paving, steps and entries, and commercial floors, as well as kitchen and bathroom surfaces. Outdoor granite is more likely to want sealing than an indoor benchtop, because it takes weather and organic staining rather than cooking oil.
